Babilonia Teatri is the new artistic director for the next three years

It will be Babilonia Teatri, a theater collective founded by Valeria Raimondi and Enrico Castellani (winner in 2016 of the Silver Lion at the Venice Theatre Biennale) to lead artistically the next three years of Pergine Festival.

“We are very happy to start this collaboration with Pergine Spettacolo Aperto,” Babilonia commented. “Imagining a festival for us means creating an artistic work. It means getting into dialogue with its history and its territory to try at the same time to give it a voice and to be an element of its stimulation and growth. We would like to create a festival in which we welcome artists and audiences together, to put theater at the center of it and make it a place of encounter and confrontation: of mutual exchange. A festival that knows how to juxtapose, overlap and intersect different languages, generations and traditions.”

Babilonia Teatri is a formation that has entered the contemporary theatrical scene with a decisive step, distinguishing itself for a language that in many voices is defined as pop, rock, punk. Castellani and Raimondi compose dramaturgies with a unique pacing on the contradictions of today, brought to the stage with a rebellious attitude. They have investigated different angles of provincial life, crystallizing it as a microcosm of a universal pain, tackled with desecrating courage. Courage and innovation that – in addition to the prestigious Silver Lion – have earned the group numerous awards, including the Premio Scenario, two Ubu Prizes, the Hystrio Prize for dramaturgy, the National Association of Theatre Critics Prize and the Franco Enriquez Prize for civil commitment.

Already performers within Pergine Festival, they have been appreciated for their design and creative skills, interconnections at the national and international level, and willingness to put themselves on the line in an unprecedented and innovative adventure.
